Cool record shop?

Back in Los Angeles, a few years ago I discovered what had to be the mecca of record stores: Amoeba Records. The first time I stepped inside the front doors my jaw dropped at the mere sight of the rows upon rows of cds and all the different sections the store had. I learned that day that you should never, ever walk into Amoeba without a list, because otherwise you’ll be so overwhlemed by their selection you’ll forget what you went in for!

Can anyone suggest a cool, indie record store in or around Boston?? Not a newbury comics store or crap like that. Something that has a great selection and prices an unemployed graduate student can afford? If I get any suggestions, I promise to check ‘em out and report back!

Open letter n.1

To the Guy on the redline who wouldn’t stop looking at me today:

I thought it was very cute of you to have an earphone splitter on your mp3 player to share the music with who I’m assuming was your girlfriend. There’s something very tender about sharing the musical soundtrack of your train ride around the city with someone you care for. But just because she couldn’t see who or what you were looking at while she had her head resting on your shoulder doesn’t mean you should stare at other girls. Seriously.

Dave Eggers + Valentino Achak Deng …

… are coming to Harvard Yard’s Memorial Church February 26th to discuss What is the What. The event starts at 6:30. I remember hating the acoustics last time I was there. Hopefully things will be different.

Language + Diversity = Comfort

Today on my train ride into the city, I couldn’t help but overhear the woman behind me reading out loud. She had an accent that made it obvious English was not her native tongue and I almost wanted to be annoyed that I couldn’t concentrate on my school work. Suddenly I found that I was overcome with a smile and thought it was rather humorous that as she practiced reading in a language she probably did not know all that well, I myself was struggling to understand the Spanish article I was reading for class.

Guest Post: The Boston Wine Expo

Dave Glod is a law student at Boston College, and filed this report

I had never heard of the Boston Wine Expo prior to this year, or you may rest assured that I would have written this article at least one year earlier. I will not cite any specific reason for having been remiss in this regard - perhaps it is because I lived in New York until now; perhaps because I did not run with the correct crowd, colony, and/or pride; perhaps because wine was not invented until just recently. The world may never know. What the world must know is that this - provided that one enjoys wine - is precisely where one should be on a particular weekend in mid-February.
