The AP is reporting that Massachusetts shelters saw at least a 16% increase in people staying in homeless shelters from 1999 to 2003. You can read the report this news account is based on at UMass Boston’s Center for Social Policy (pdf).
Just one of the many scary statistics: the percentage of homeless shelter guests in our state having some college or above increased from 20 percent in 1999 to 28 percent in 2003. In Boston the number was even higher — 31% with some college or above.
