Stacy Peralta is owner of one of the most popular skateboard companies in the 80’s and director of the acclaimed documentary Dogtown and Z boys. His much anticipated second film about big wave pioneers Riding Giants opens tonight. I’ve seen this called one of the best surf films ever made. That’s a tall order considering the popularity and accomplishments of the genre. Either way I’m stoked, coming in the same week that brought us the first hurricane swells of the season, I’m in the mood to see 60 foot wave projected on a screen.
I’m skateboard ignorant. My Aunt gave me a very cool orange model for my 10th birthday and my mother immediately confiscated it until I was in high school, by which time the skate infection had passed me over and I found the whole pastime inane. That said, I know who Stacy Peralta is because I heard an intriguing interview with him about Z Boys on NPR’s Fresh Air (I’m sure skate afficionados would find this all lame and vomit-inducing). You can check out the interview at NPR’s site.
Go see this movie. its for surfers and non surfers alike. Their are many charachter’s who give some entertaining interviews. Greg Knoll is a nut. Swearing in almost every sound bite, in a cute old man kinda way. Plus its a piece of americana. My only complaint is the ommission of Hawaiian riders. I mean I understand this was about three different surfers essentially telling the story of big wave riding. How can you do that without including an Hawaiian? Anyway. Its up there for great surf movies and summer is almost over.
