According to the Globe: Basketball named official Massachusetts state sport – The Boston Globe – we now have a new state sport.
Which brings me to two questions:
1) Is Mass a state or a commonwealth? What’s the difference, anyway? Are there other commonwealths?
2) Do we need a ‘state’ sport? And, if so, its obviously baseball….

The other commonwealths that are really states are Pennsylvania, Virginia and Kentucky.
As for basketball, well, yeah, baseball is bigger now, but unlike baseball, basketball was actually invented here (at the Springfield YMCA), so if you’re going to have some meaningless thing like that (you should check out the complete list of official state symbols), basketball makes sense.
